When Should You Downsize Your Piercing Jewelry—And Why It Matters

Piercing Downsize Identity Body Piercing Chicago

After getting a fresh piercing, you’ll usually leave the studio with a slightly longer jewelry backing (flat back labret) to allow room for swelling. But once the initial healing phase is over, it’s important to come back in to downsize—and here’s why.

When to Downsize

For most piercings, downsizing happens between 4–8 weeks after your initial appointment, depending on the location and how your body is healing. Your piercer will assess the swelling and determine the right time for your specific piercing.

Why It’s Important

– Prevents shifting & irritation: Long jewelry can catch on clothing or hair, causing the piercing to shift or get irritated.

– Reduces risk of bumps: Movement from excess length can lead to friction bumps or prolonged healing.

– Looks cleaner & feels better: A shorter post sits more snugly against the body, giving your piercing a more polished look and feel.

What to Expect

Downsizing is a quick and easy process. We’ll swap out your original jewelry backing for a shorter post (backing) while keeping the same gem or design (or help you choose something new if you’re ready for a style change!).

If you’re not sure whether it’s time to downsize, feel free to stop by the studio or give us a call. We’re here to keep your piercings happy, healthy, and looking their best!
