Re-Piercing: When and How to Safely Get Pierced Again

Re-Piercing: When and How to Safely Get Pierced Again

Maybe your old piercing closed up. Maybe it wasn’t done quite right the first time. Or maybe you’re just ready for a fresh start with better jewelry and expert care. Whatever your reason, re-piercing is a safe and empowering way to reclaim your style — and at Identity Body Piercing, we’re here to help you do it the right way.

What Is a Re-Pierce?

A re-pierce is when we create a new piercing in the same general area as a previous one. This could be an ear lobe, nostril, or navel that’s closed over time, or a piercing that was placed incorrectly, healed poorly, or simply didn’t suit your anatomy.

Why Piercings Close

Piercings can close for a few reasons — removing jewelry too soon, trauma or irritation, improper aftercare, or simply letting it go unused for a while. Even well-healed piercings can begin to shrink or close if jewelry isn’t worn consistently.

When It’s Safe to Re-Pierce

Our piercers will evaluate the area to make sure your tissue is fully healed and healthy before re-piercing. Typically:
  • Completely closed piercings can often be safely redone.
  • Partially open piercings might need slight adjustment or a new placement nearby.
  • Scar tissue or keloid-prone areas require a little more care and professional assessment.

If there’s still any tenderness, discoloration, or raised tissue from your previous piercing, we’ll recommend waiting a bit longer to prevent complications.

Sometimes We Can Reopen It Instead 👏

Not every closed piercing needs to be fully re-pierced! In some cases, if the channel has only closed on the surface, our piercers can gently reopen it using a sterile taper — a smooth, conical tool designed to guide jewelry back through the existing piercing.

This is only possible if:

  • The piercing hasn’t completely sealed shut.
  • The tissue feels soft, not scarred or painful.
  • There’s no sign of infection or irritation.

Our team will always assess the area first to ensure this approach is safe. If it’s possible, reopening with a taper can be a quick, low-discomfort alternative to a full re-pierce — and your jewelry can often be reinserted the same day.

The Identity Approach 🐝

At Identity Body Piercing, every re-pierce or reopening starts with a consultation. Our team will:
  • Examine the area to find the best placement and angle.
  • Determine whether it’s better to reopen or re-pierce.
  • Ensure old scar tissue doesn’t interfere with healing.
  • Walk you through your options for high-quality, implant-grade jewelry from brands like BVLA, Buddha Jewelry, Tawapa, Anatometal, Neometal, Moll Doll Designs, and more.
  • Provide clear aftercare instructions to promote healthy healing.
Our APP-member piercers use sterile, single-use needles — never piercing guns — and take the time to ensure your experience is as comfortable, clean, and confidence-boosting as possible.

Why People Love Re-Piercing

Re-piercing can feel like a fresh start. Many clients love it because it’s:

💫 A chance to correct a crooked or uneven placement.

💫 An upgrade from mall piercings to professional-level jewelry and care.

💫 A personal way to reclaim a part of your self-expression.
